The Impact of AI on User Experience Design and Personalization

As many of you may know, recently, I have been deep diving into the field of AI and looking for ways that I can use it to improve aspects of my everyday life, both personally and professionally. As a User Experience Designer, there are many tasks I do as part of my normal routine that could be automated with the help of AI, or in some cases, eliminated completely. While at the office yesterday, I was asked a question, specifically, how do I envision artificial intelligence having an impact on personalization for web and mobile interface designs. I use AI platforms like ChatGPT in my daily life, so it made sense for me to consider this technology would impact my process and the design industry as a whole.

From what we already know, AI can analyze data from users to provide real-time responses and information when prompted by a user. In past projects, I have used AI to help with tasks such as creating content inventories for websites, optimizing web content for Google search engines, SEO keyword research, competitive analysis, and automating communication.

However, when thinking specifically in relation to my design process for creating user interfaces, after some in depth research, I uncovered 3 ways that AI can directly help designers with their design process.

Creating custom Experiences for Each User

When I begin a design project, specifically designing a responsive user interface for web or mobile, one of the earliest considerations which guides many of my design decisions is knowing the audience I am designing for, and what problem they are looking to solve with my UI. Normally, this would involve in-depth conversations with the client as well as extensive research into the target audience they identify. I typically focus on current user behaviors and expectations of websites they have previously visited, usability best practices, and the goals of each user type identified within our target audience.

With the ride of AI platforms such as ChatGPT and UIZard, AI can now help make designing with user data a much more seamless process by providing designers with behavioral data about users to make informed design decisions. One of my core principles I follow when I am designing an interface is that for every decision I make, I need to have rationale to support it, whether it comes from user behavior date, best practices for web, or human centered design principles, I always look for a direct connection to how my decision will relate to the goal of the business, the user, or both.

AI platforms such as UIZard can help with rapid concept generation for creating multiple iterations of a concept design, allowing you to quickly experiment with multiple layout variations to test their effectiveness and usability.  Additionally, AI image generation programs such as Dall-E, MidJourney, and Leonardo.AI can analyze user data to create custom experience variations for individual user types, and assist in creating custom interactions for different user types based on preferences.

Personally, I recommend using UIZard, MidJourney, or Leonardo to help with UI concept creation as these platforms specialize in image generation and perform with more accuracy than Dall-E in my opinion.

Content Customization

When it comes to content, one of the core uses for AI has been asking questions to get quick, direct answers, writing emails, and creating simple content blocks. You can take this functionality further by providing the AI platform of your choice with the context of the content you want to customize. When we apply this concept to personalization, providing user data as part of the context will allow you to customize the content that you tailor to specific user types.

Platforms such as ChatGPT and other prompt based AI can understand natural language patterns, specifically those of human conversation. This means the you can supply a specific condition for the AI you are speaking to, and instruct it to respond with a specific response for that individual user. The most common example of this you can see in action would be with online Chatbots for websites. Remember, AI still gains most of its knowledge from human input (right now), so although the AI makes the decisions, its logic originates from behaviors learned from humans.

Continuous Learning and Adaptation

To piggyback off of the last section, the knowledge base of AI is still supplied by human beings, which is why in some cases, platforms such as ChatGPT will respond with “My knowledge base only extends up to 2021/2023” etc when asked for information related to current events. However, it is important to remember that AI is constantly learning from human inputs, responses, and existing language and behavior models. This is where you come in.

When you use AI platforms such as ChatGPT and others, there is often an option presented with its response that allows you to provide feedback and let the AI know whether its response was right, wrong, or needs improvement. When you receive an answer that you know concretely is not accurate or could be improved, selecting the negative feedback option (usually a thumbs down icon directly below the answer) will allow you to supply a more accurate answer that the AI you are speaking with will learn from, and improve on its future responses. Remember, AI learns from humans (right now), so your inputs and responses help improve the language model that AI uses on a global scale. AI doesn’t just teach us, we help AI learn so that it can teach us more efficiently. We help AI help us by teaching it with our responses, allowing it to continuously learn and adapt to our needs.

Final Thoughts

The ability of AI to analyze vast amounts of data and learn from user interactions means that we can anticipate and respond to user needs more accurately than ever before. By leveraging AI, designers can ensure that every aspect of the user interface, including their content, is informed by real user data and behaviors, making for a more engaging and effective user experience. Furthermore, the continuous learning and adaptation feature of AI platforms further emphasizes the dynamic nature of design and personalization, where we as designers and AI work in tandem to evolve in response to user feedback and changing preferences. AI holds the key to unlocking deeper levels of personalization and user engagement. By embracing AI and its capabilities, UX designers can not only enhance their creative process but also contribute to a more personalized, responsive, and user-centric digital world.
